Federal Income Tax Instructions

If you are a working American then chances are you are going to be required to file an annual federal income tax return. The most common income tax return is the Form 1040.

If you are a United States citizen and you find that you may not have to file a return, the IRS suggests that you still file a tax return as you may still receive a tax refund of some kind.

Instructions on When and Where to File

If you are using Form 1040 then your return must be filed by April 17th of each tax year. This rule does not apply if you were serving in the Unites States Armed Forces. If you find that you cannot file your return in time then you will need to file Form 4868 to file for an extension.

There are many different ways to file your return. E-filing is the easiest and fastest way to file your return. If you make less than $56,000.00 annually then E-filing is usually free.

Important Tips to Remember

Name Change- If you have changed your name, remember that you must file a name change with the Social Security office before filing your return.

Social Security Number- If you print your social security number incorrectly or forget to enter it can cause a major error on your return.

PO Boxes- You may only report your address as a PO Box if the post office does not deliver mail to your home.
